Calendar art

Post by redcrx »

Last season I bought a "nice" camera and took a bunch of test shots of some hosta that were around. My daughter "borrowed" my nice camera for an art class and was nice enough to take some of the photos and make a calendar out of them. The calendar was nice but the plants in the photos were not at their best when I was testing the camera. This season I went out with the intention of capturing some nice shots of nice plants. I thought I would share what the pages will look like.

Ed,
Your hosta pictures are very nice, but that night blooming cereus pic just blows me away.
Hope your 2011 calendar brings you through a very good year in the garden.

The last few years I have created calendars from photos taken during the season. I'm not doing it this season - just not in the mood. But I thought I would post here some of the photos that could have been in the calendar. I have posted many of these here during the season.

Sorry to hear that you were not in the mood to make a calendar for this year---your hostas are beautiful. I especially like your Mourning Dove (pretty color), Journey's End (love the coloring and the rippled edges), Inspire Greatness (has such a lovely contrast to it), and who couldn't love Yellow Polka Dot Bikini? Ooh la la is a pretty hosta. I saw it in a private garden and fell in love with it. Not sure if I will be able to find one here.

Thanks for looking. The Mourning Dove, Journey's End and Ooh La La all came from Chris.

I did a calendar of just hosta flowers a couple of years ago. I'll try to find those photos for something to look at while winter does it's weird thing - finally saw a little snow yesterday. Probably most of the flowers were posted here before but this was just the best gathered together.

I can see how far you've come over the last few years - your hostas are really maturing. And that Ooh La Lah really caught my eye. Your soil is clearly more suited for that one than ours because mine have never had such a mature look to them. Thanks for sharing :)

First of all, regarding Ooh la la, I don't have a lot of sun, but I would buy it anyways! The one I saw was not very big but the intense coloring blew me away. A very pretty hosta. I hope you post a picture of it next year.

Thank you for showing us your calendar flowers. What a great idea! It is amazing that a purple flower can vary so much. In my earlier "hosta" years, I just didn't understand why I would have to post a flower picture of a hosta that I wanted to have identified. Wasn't a purple flower, just another purple flower! Now I know better.

I hope you don't mind, but I took some of the more distinct purple flowers and put it into a collage photo. Having them side by side allows you to compare them. (I just recently became aware of a photo editing program that I could do this with.) I hope you like it.

The flowers are incredibly variable. I have been noting differences in the striping patterns, i.e. how many stripes are there, are they markedly different on the sepal and the petal, do the stripes descend into the throat of the flower, is the "main" center stripe the same length as the two major stripes, is the center stripe the darkest, it does on and on. I have even noticed a curl at the end of a stripe - weird. And then there are spots and speckles on the petal. And then there are yellow and red flowers.

Here are some flower pictures that didn't make the "cut" for the 2013 calendar. These have nothing to do with what I was mentioning above - that for another topic.
