Hosta Seedling

Post by poppi »

I bought some Christmas Tree Gala Seeds from the AHS auction several years ago. Here's one of the seedlings. I've never seen anything like this before. :D The leaf is 14" long and 7" wide. The color this time of year is almost florescent yellow. It does change to a light green as the summer progresses. I'd be interested in getting your thoughts.

Thanks, Poppi

Oh, I don't know, Poppi...I think you should just dig it up and send it to me and I'll give the poor
pitiful thing a good home out here in the country.

Oops, did I say that out loud? Wow...I like it a bunch! Those long leaves are really elegant!

That's a keeper. Should be useful in someone's breeding program. Has it set seed?

Wow! That is a fantastic leaf shape.
Tigger is right: this plant just begs to be used in a breeding program.
Maybe it's possible to get the same leaf shape with some more substance.

You know, Poppi, I keep looking at that bottom picture and I continue to get this mental image of a small crab running along the beach. Your garden name should include a reference/inference to that, such as Crab Dip, Holy Crab, Crab Smacked or something along those lines....

I hate to say I haven't noticed if it's set seed yet. I think last year was the first year it sent out scapes...and it could have been that the deer ate them. I'll pay attention this year and let you know.

Pieter, I've actually thought of naming it Yogi Bero after my late husband. I'll see what I can do with the crab theme though.

Have you thought about TC
It is the most interesting hosta I have seen since Quiet Waters.
I would love to grow it in the garden or maybe in a tall pot

No I haven't thought about tissue culture. I'm at best an amateur and wouldn't know the first thing about how to go about it. Thanks for your interest though.
