Hostas + Hail = Heartbreak

Post by kaylyred »

We were hit by nearly 2" hail Sunday evening. The results break my heart.

My newly planted beauties (mostly from Hallson) are in dire condition.

I'm trying to keep things in perspective. Dozens were killed by tornadoes over the weekend, but me and my family are safe and sound. Still, I can't help mourning my garden this season. And I'd be lying if I said I didn't cry.

Hi Karen,

You have my sympathy. I know you are really into your endeavor.

There will be a second flush of fresh, new leaves. In a few weeks they will have recuperated, the damage won't look so severe  .

Take Care,
Rick

So sorry! :bawl: :bawl: The good thing is they will put up a second leaf bloom. It is hard to see though. We have been lucky, no hail so far, but we had strong winds with thunderstorms last Thursday and a tree branch fell on my Sum and Substance and Pauls Glory. Broke about half the leaves off each one :(

I am glad you are all safe and sound though!

My gardens have been shredded by hail four of the last six years... it does hurt. Here's the good news - you are still early in your season. You can remove the worst damage and you will likely get new flushes on most/all of the damaged plants. You are still going to have pretty hostas this year. Time to clean up the worst, overlook a few holes... and get back to good gardening. The hostas will take care of themselves - the important parts are all under ground!

I know what you mean. We had a big hail storm last night and the hosta are shredded. :bawl: :bawl: Oh well, I can't fix it or change it...it is what it is. Between the hail :bawl: and deer :x I don't stand a chance.

Sorry, Poppi. :(

At least I don't have deer to contend with here in town. But I do have rabbits. One munched on my 'Komodo Dragon,' I suspect...but that was before the hail got it. And before the greyhounds got the rabbit. They took out the mom rabbit and then her entire nest of babies. It was a pretty traumatic day for me, not to mention the poor bunnies. But I guess that's one way to keep them away from my yard and my hostas. :???:

SO sad to see that. I'm glad it was only hail, not a tornado, and you are right; we do need
to keep perspective. That said, it is hard to go out every day and look at that.
