I got American Icon a few years ago. It sits in bright shade but never gets direct sun. It's looking "odd" this season.
I'm wondering if it needs to be moved into direct sun.

Yeah, um, that one looks a little funky.
Mine is in its third year and it's big and beautiful. It's still coloring up, but it's already big and wavy.

Hello,
They do fun funny things in cold, drawn out springs. H. 'American Icon' is a strong grower. Mine get alot of bright light with some direct morning-early afternoon sun.

Re: Anyone growing American Icon
I was also thinking that something odd might have happened to it this spring. It almost looks like a stressed out potted plant that took a hit from the elements. Maybe that eye tried to come up too early and then got zapped by freezing temps, or maybe there is something else going on down under the ground. Hard to tell, but hopefully it will just grow out of it in time. It should be worth the time to let it grow some more.
We had quite a bit of trouble with its parent, Choo Choo Train, and decided after last season to just give up on it. Of course now the darn Choo Choo Trains are looking great this year

Thanks folks. It does have a "stressed" look to it.

Re: Anyone growing American Icon
I had mention this American Icon in a different topic and thought I would update the photos.
In 2009 and 2010 it looked normal. In 2011 it came in with thin leaves and really rippled edge. In 2012 it came in the same way.

Have you tried feeding it Epsom salts?
