Mouse Trap vs Snow Mouse

Post by ViolaAnn »

Hi folks,

I'm wondering whether any of you can tell the difference between 'Mouse Trap' and 'Snow Mouse'. I have both - both new in 2010. They seem identical to me. Both are 1st generation sports of 'Blue Mouse Ears'. Do these stay pretty much identical or are differences more apparent as they mature?

Pretty much the same plant, right down to the green flecks that it can get in the center. The Blue Mouse Ears family is so prone to sports that I think it will be like the Gold Standard/Striptease family of plants where after a while everyone will have their own version of different sports with different names. We even have a bunch of sports we've isolated from Blue Mouse Ears and have one that is being TC'd but I don't know how well it will produce true to type plants.

They look like they are growing well for you though :D

They are growing quite well though 'Mouse Trap' was so slow to emerge this year that I thought I might have lost it.

I didn't take a picture this week, but here is the whole mouse garden with its watchful cat taken maybe 15 days ago.

Starting with 'Blue Mouse Ears' and making more or less a clockwise spiral, they are 'Mighty Mouse', 'Country Mouse', 'Cat and Mouse' (though I think it's reverting), 'Royal Mouse Ears', 'Holy Mouse Ears', 'Frosted Mouse Ears' (Very similar to 'Mighty Mouse' except that the margin is a slightly different colour early in the season), 'Snow Mouse', 'Mouse Trap' and, in the centre the one I've dubbed 'Mighty Confused Mouse' (supposed to be 'Might Mouse' but barely one leaf has the correct pattern).

Viola Ann, I don't think country mouse is a BME sport. I've looked it up before and I don't remember who it's related to but I was surprised is wasn't BME.

It's definitely NOT a BME sport - different family completely - a 'Bill Dress's Blue' sport. It still belongs in a mouse garden.

Cute, but next year BME will fill out half the pot.

I'll give some of it to the Ottawa Horticultural Society for their auction.

Very nice group Ann :D , I've caught a few mice this yr... BME (4th) , MM, HME, FME, One Iota , other minis Mouse Tracks and Mighty Moe. A lot of them look alike but I love the substance.
