H. 'Candy Dish'

It's probably too late to ask, since I already own the plant, but does anyone have 'Candy Dish'? And, if so, what do you think of it?

I won 'Candy Dish' at the Midwest Regional Auction. I figured my $30 was going to a good cause, and the plant was good sized. But looking at it now I guess it's not quite what I expected. Photos made the leaves look glossier and more rippled than mine, which is overall just a little odd looking and not very symmetrical.

I'm not complaining, really. Just wondering what to expect. I'll try to post a photo once I get it planted.

Mine has been very slow. It is attractive, but has not significantly increased since it has been in the ground for the last 3 years.

Here's a better picture. It may be a lighting problem. I have two the same age - one in a lot of shade and one in bright shade and may get some direct sun late in the day. The one in sun is doing much better. I mentioned taking a piece off for the trade this year which is why the plant is not round but still looks good. I have to move the shaded one.

Hard to say the conditions the plant had been growing in, conditions during travel, if it had been divided, etc. Let it settle in...I bet you will like it next year!

Almost all plants known for their ripples take a while to show well. Give it time. It's not the slowest plant in my garden, but it's far from the fastest. It got some TLC last year and it's really starting to look good this year.

Thanks, all! I'll let it settle in. It's a pretty nice-sized plant (bigger than I thought it was, actually) with three eyes. Maybe not as pretty as I'd thought it might be right now, but I'm willing to give it a few years. I'm eager to see it next season.

Thanks for the tip about giving it more sun. I'll definitely put it in a brighter spot, now.

Candy Dish is an awesome plant. The one I have is not the fastest grower but maturing into a lovely plant. It just has to get past puberty and that akward stage. I have seen just perfect clumps of Candy Dish. And it usually takes the prize in cut leaf competition.

I'm patiently waiting for mine to do something. I haven't yelled or sworn at it yet, maybe that would work better. The first year it was devoured by slugs, so that probably set it back a bit. Last year it came back but was still a single eye. This year it might be two little small eyes. Perhaps this one is more picky about growing conditions, but the way I look at it, if it won't grow here, then it might not do well in other gardens too so I've never put it into production.

I have 2 that I got from Bob Solberg....beautiful hostas and decent growers. That is the only place they were available when I got them.

This is their 3rd season in the ground and they are each 5-6 eyes. While they are not super-speedy they have kept pretty good pace with most around them. No significant trouble here from slugs or anything. Right now they look really scorched, along with many of my hostas, because of the weather we've had this year. Last year I didn't even take very good care of my hostas and watered very little. Candy Dish still managed to increase.

Very nice hosta in my opinion. Lovely flowers, too.

I planted my CD last year and the slugs almost devoured the whole thing. It fared better this summer after I gave it the ammonia treatment. The tag that came with the hosta stated that CD would get 24"w x 12"h. Mine gets morning sun, which might account for its light green colour. I have it planted near Lakeside Looking Glass and CD isn't as shiny.

Ed, thanks for the lovely flower pictures. I don't remember seeing flowers on mine this past summer.

Candy dish has done well for me but I'm not sure it is as advertised....which I seem to recall being very glossy with good substance. Mine has a slight sheen and what I would consider as "ok" substance.

I agree with this assessment. Mine looks shiny in the photo above because of the rain, but otherwise it's only slightly glossy. Substance is just so-so. Paul's looks to have thicker substance, but not the dark green high-gloss look in the marketing photo that made me want to buy this hosta in the first place. I wonder if this is another one of those where the OS looks good but the plant doesn't hold up as well when it goes into production.

Here is a pic of my Candy Dish from last year. I actually left it in this pot over the winter and it survived and multiplied....which is more than I can say for some of the other potted ones that I took better care of for the winter. So I have to give it points for that, even if I really don't feel it lives up to it's billing and the "glamour shot" that sold me on it in the first place

Candy Dish today - it's in a trough with it's siblings Marilyn Monroe and Smokey. MM is in the middle and dominating. Smokey is almost invisible on the back side. Candy Dish is the only one in flower at the moment - it's in a shady spot.
