Hosta of the Day 'Sara' - Post Your Pics

Post by ViolaAnn »

Today's hosta is 'Sara'. Billed as medium-large, this one gets larger than I had anticipated; so it gets an occasional dividing and because it was divided last spring it's somewhat smaller this year than last. 'Sara' is lutescent - gets more yellow in the leaves as the season progresses. Sara is also the name of my younger daughter. It was new to me Spring 2006.

Name: H. 'Sara' - 2008

Description: Deep gold, moderately wavy and rugose leaves with heavy substance. Semi-upright. Lutescent (colours become lighter as the season progresses).

Size: Medium-Large - but I would call mine large.
Origin: H. 'Rippling Waves' hybrid
Flowers: Bell-shaped, pale lavender on upright scape, late July.
Source: Hosta Choice Nursery
Added to garden: Spring 2006
Notes: Sara is my younger daughter's name. Best leaf colour is obtained in morning sun. (Mine is in some afternoon sun.) Pest resistant though, like many of mine this year, cut worms found it early in the season.

2014 - 9th year in my garden. It was divided quite a few years ago to share with daughter Sara. Picture from July 16, 2014. Nearby hosta is 'Janet'.

2015 - June 21. Nice sideways picture showing a bit of the vase-shaped mound early in the season.

2015 - Aug. 13. Later in the season - should show some of the lutescent qualities of this plant, but it didn't show as much this year as in some years.
