Daily Hosta - 'Katsuragawa Beni' - Add your pics

Post by ViolaAnn »

Name: H. 'Katsuragawa Beni'

Description: Red petioles that go up into the leaf veins. Shiny dark green leaves are quite elongated and have great substance on a small compact clump.
Size: Small although mine was getting much larger by the time I divided it last spring.
Origin: Discovered in the mountains of Japan by Mr. Toshiro Shimizu
Flowers: Deep lavender on 16" scapes in midsummer
Added to garden: spring 2006

Registry - not registered as of Nov. 2012

Hosta Library - http://www.hostalibrary.org/k/katsuragawabeni.html

Notes: The red colour is most pronounced in the spring when temperatures are cool. Seems to be a bit prone to slug damage. And I'm not sure the dull green leaves really hold much appeal for me. I divided it in the spring to get rid of it, but in the end, kept one division which I grew in a pot all summer.

This one has been dug, divided and will be out to plant sales in the spring. It just doesn't thrill me and my yard is too small to be full of hostas that don't.

Bought a Katsuragawa Beni this summer because I love all the photos of it, but mine really pooped out in August. Does anyone else have that happen?

Well, I threatened to get rid of this one but couldn't bring myself to do so. I did offer some up to plant sales, but I kept one division and it's doing well.

2015 - June 21. It's still in a pot, but doing well. As I write this on Sept. 21, it has a large bud. I don't believe it has ever bloomed for me in the past.

Some flowers from yesterday - the plant is getting smaller - it's hidden under a mountain laurel that needs some cutting back.

This is the first time, I think, that mine has bloomed. A long hot summer! And I will miss it as I'll be away for awhile. This bud was taken a few days ago.

(Also a chance for me to see if I got the pictures small enough. New camera. Takes heavier pics than the old one does.)

Still in a pot in 2017 and it seems to like it.
