Daily Hosta #2 - 'Allegan Fog' - Add your pics

Post by ViolaAnn »

EDITED TO SAY I'M GOING TO REVISIT THESE THREADS WITH 2012 PICTURES AND ADD SOME I DIDN'T POST LAST YEAR. I INVITE YOU TO ADD YOUR OWN PICS. Aug. 26, 2012
----------------------------------------
Name: H. 'Allegan Fog'

Description: Each medium-green leaf has a wide centre of creamy white, dotted liberally with green flecks. 2' tall spike of light lavender flowers in midsummer. It is a viridescent Hosta 'fortunei'-type and will turn mostly green by late summer.
Size: Small 19"w x 13"h
Origin: Hybrid of H. 'Fortunei Aurea'
Flowers: Funnel-shaped, purple-streaked lavender flowers on upright, leafy scape in late July.
Added to garden: spring 2006
Notes: I love the misty leaves on this one. They emerge with near white centred leaves and gradually go misty. Mine has never gone nearly green. Mine has NEVER set seed and I wish it would. I will have to check out one or two eyes that seem to be trying to turn green.

That is a good representation of what Allegan Fog SHOULD look like, but unfortunately there are plants in the trade that don't even turn as misted green as yours is showing. My true to type plants don't really turn solid green but they do turn to green on green. The off types get some speckling and turn from white to greenish white but never get dark enough to be true Allegan Fogs. I've seen the same problem with Whirlwind in the trade.

Does the light make a difference Chris? I divided up my 'Whirlwind' last year and grew one division in a spot that gets a lot of morning sun. It darkened much faster and more deeply than the one that gets more shade. BTW, I moved it when I divided into a spot with more light than before and it also darkened more than it ever had in the past.

Here's a 4-year old pic of mine. It's quite a bit larger now, and in fact, a few people who've come to tour
the garden are surprised at the size; they had thought of it as a small plant. Mine does get greener as
the summer goes on, but does it slowly.

'Allegan Fog' - July 3, 2012. 2012 was a very hot summer and too much sun; so my picture taking was limited. In addition many of my hostas fell victim to ravenous cut worms. This one did all right, but because of an extremely early spring turned greener earlier in the season than usual.

This isn't a real good shot of mine to show the size of it. It is definitely a larger sized medium, not a small.

And here's the 'NOT Allegan Fog' that I got from Chris this summer. Pics were taken the same day; it did mist a little more later in the season.

So what do seeds from Allegan Fog turn out? Do you get any streaky babys?
Asking because it set seed this year if anybody wants them. 3 pods

I have a great deal of difficulty getting mine to set seed. Last year I helped it out and got a few seeds, but they didn't germinate. This year, I had difficulty getting pollen from other plants and got no pods.

My 'Allegan Fog' is now quite mature; so I don't see a lot of change from year to year. I continue to have difficulty getting it to set seed and this year I was not successful.

Here are three pics of Allegan fog from May, July, and August 2014 showing the misting changes over time.

My plant this year - early July. It was still blooming when I returned from vacation on July 22 and I managed to transfer some pollen, though I don't remember from what plant, but I actually have a seed pod developing. :D
