Daily Hosta - 'Wheee!' - add your pics

Post by ViolaAnn »

Name: H. 'Wheee!'

Description: a way cool, wavy edged hosta with green leaves and a creamy margin that ruffles and quiltis all around the leaves and all the way down the petioles.
Size: Medium (30"w x 14"h)
Origin: Bill Meyer sport of undisclosed heritage
Flowers: Purple in summer
Source: Budd Gardens
Added to garden: Spring 2012
Notes: PPAF. This has shown spectacular growth, especially given that several of the original leaves were showing frost damage when I bought it. I'll be putting it into the garden this week - end of September.

Registry Link: not registered as of August 2012

I just added this to my garden a couple weeks ago. Still a bit young to show that nice of ruffling. Cant wait to see what it does next spring. I'm a sucker for the ruffles.

When this one pops out of the ground you can almost hear it shouting "WHEEE!"!

Stunning specimen, as always, Cowboy ! :D

But I have to ask ... the white-centered one next to it ... what is that ... Imperial Palace ?

Thanks,
Ludi :D

Thanks Ludi!

The Hosta on the left is 'Simply Sharon'.

I'm going to have to do some rearranging next year as, hopefully, these Hosta will be overcrowded.

Sharon, huh ?!? That one seems to jump on and off my Wishlist, depending on my mood. I have seen some horrible pics as well as some awe inspiring ones.

She looks a bit bleached, do you have her in some sun ? REALLY resembles a young 'Imperial Palace' with those colors, imo.

::sigh:: Looks like it's back on the list again. :p

Sorry, not trying to derail the 'Wheee' thread. I'll stop now. :(

Ludi,

It is 'Simply Sharon', not 'Sharon' just to be clear.

These Hosta are about 10' to the East of my house in one of the sunnier locations in my gardens.

Here are two photos from June and August to compare with the July photo. The July photo (in the prior post) is taken at a different angle from these two photos. You can see the leaves lightening up in July and August. That is 'Forbidden Fruit' behind 'Simply Sharon'.

Sorry Cowboy, and Thanks for clarifying ... I was being coy and acting like I knew her on a first name basis. But yes, the registration is 'Simply Sharon'.

I do see the colors I am more familiar with in your June photo and hope I didn't give the impression that I thought it might be something other than 'Simply Sharon'.

A gracious host with your pics and knowledge.

Thanks again,
Ludi :D

A couple of potted 'Wheee!'. I think that's a Sea Beacon on the bottom.

2015 - July 3. Quite a lot of growth on this one. Was grown in near full sun this year due to the loss of a tree and except for late season fading of colour, it did very well.

There's a discussion of Wheee! on the AHS facebook page right now, as someone posted what seems to be a flat Wheee! Carol/Bill have purchased a flat Wheee! as well. Is it variable in TC? or maybe just one batch came out different?

So, weigh in on Wheee! Here's mine this year, clearly still unfurling. The extreme curliness and broad petioles persist. (In the "flat Wheee!" the petioles look more like normal hosta petioles.)

I've obviously missed some of that discussion on FB but I thought it looked rather more flat than mine. As you can see from the picture above of mine last year, it's quite curly. A bit early to tell this year as it's not yet unfurled. It IS coming though and looks pretty curly.

Finally buckled under and purchased one this spring after I saw a most unusual one at a local nursery. This one almost looks like 2 different plants but in reality one shoot has fasciated, as you can see from the scape in the 2nd picture.

This is mine from about a week ago. I bought it last year when I saw a sample in the nursery that looked to fasciated, just liked the looks of it. Indeed the petiole on that shoot was fasciated alright but there's nothing to suggest it reoccurred this year. See my posting earlier for last year's pictures...
