Blue Ivory

Post by Charlie »

Well my order just arrived and I have to say Blue Ivory looks like it's going to be a real eye catcher, the other 2 look good also. Thanks again Chris. :)

My Blue Ivory has been pretty slow... but every time I walk by it I think "my, that is a pretty plant!" Given that it is surrounded by a couple of thoursand hosta plants, that is a pretty good endorsement of your choice!

You've heard the saying: "Good things come in small packages."

Went to a garden show this spring and took a photo of Blue Ivory. Here it is:

Pretty! Maybe the key to getting 'Blue Ivory' to really show off is to plant them in clusters. The ones shown in your picture are pretty much the size mine is, and I've had it for 4 years. ;)

I have three eyes on mine, but I started with two. And I think it's on its fourth season, if I recall correctly. :???:

Great Escape looks a lot like Blue Ivory to me. Does anyone have it? Is it more vigorous?

There was a discussion a while ago that got into similarity between Blue Ivory & Great Escape and why they look the same:

Yeah, the cluster idea is a good one. Mine is also four years and has one eye with a handful of leaves. It's like a pretty little oddity that doesn't quite fit into my garden. I've been thinking of just giving it to my FIL...I give him all the hostas that don't work out for me. His back garden is like my own "Island of misfit toys", lol.

I guess a quick way of adding substance to a hosta is to plant three in a cluster. A hosta retailer here in Ottawa did it with his Patriot. It looked really great in his garden. My Blue Ivory is still small but looking good.

When I had a large hosta sale 2 years ago, I lifted and divided many, many plants. For several, I replanted what I didn't divide to sell in clusters of 3. It made the clump look larger right away and it will have the added bonus of making it easier should I want to divide the plant in the future. It worked very well for most of the varieties which now look like 1 large clump. Just one or 2 have been a bit slower to increase than I anticipated, but they'll eventually catch up.

These are pictures from last here, but here are a few examples:

'Ani Machi'

'Illicit Affair'

'Lakeside Zinger' may have had more than 3 clusters - this forms a very dense mound.

To get back on topic, here's my 'Blue Ivory' - picture taken yesterday. It looks healthy, but small and slow growing. I may move it farther from my Linden Tree and see if it grows faster.
