Hosta bed actualized

Post by Zkathy »

Dancing queen moved into the sassafras bed. Image
Key West found a home apparently in the middle of a game trail. Image
And the new hosta bed: Image Counterclockwise from in front of the pine tree: Liriope, Rainforest Sunrise, ostrich fern, Teaspoon, Fire and Ice, something I found growing in the woods, Touch of Class, Blue Jay, June, Bulletproof, autumn fern, First Frost.

Looking great. Beware of that Ostrich Fern, though, as it might take over the bed. Your yard looks beautiful and I look forward to seeing these filled out in a couple years :)

The Key West bed turned out to be 8'x5' with a big pine root right down the middle. I planted the Key West on the sunnier side of the root and have half the bed left.
This is the bed that gets late afternoon sun and is visible from the window over my kitchen sink. I figure I can put some more hostas there until Key West eats the space up. Brother Stephen, Journey's End and Maui Buttercups should fit for a while. Also considering Fried Bananas and Paradise Island. Any other yellows I should be thinking about?
Also in the sassafras bed behind the amsonia hubrichtii is the original bed I made for Dancing Queen until I realized she'd be hidden. My sister is stumping for a Crimson Queen Japanese maple there, but I'm wondering if Hosta Devil's Advocate might look good there. Will it get big enough to be seen ? Will it be too heavy a texture for the bed? I need to plant this weekend, too many questions!!!

Can't you have both the maple and Devils Advocate. Think they will be perfect together, My DA have been rather slow growing but have some dark beautiful colors this time of year

Do you mean a plant to replace the Dancing Queen in the sasafras bed? What about something really upright like Montana Aureomarginata? I think Devil's Advocate would get too large for that space.

I weeded yesterday afternoon waiting for the rain and then decided to water around dusk. OMG! My new hostas are gorgeous! First Frost looked like a famous performer basking in well deserved adulation. June is like the girl in high school who's just pretty even without makeup. Touch of Class is like your friend who never leaves the house without being perfectly turned out. What fun!

Here's a view from the side of the other bed. Image
I bumped a myrtle euphorbia out of the bed the Dancing Queen is in now and the bed behind the amsonia is empty. That's also my fall color interest area so I'm wondering what hosta could go there? Thank you all for your advice and interest. My DH grows vegetables and only has so much attention to give to my hosta fascination.

Paradise Island said "Me, me! I want to live in the sassafras bed. Just wait to see what a show I put on next spring while that lazy amsonia is thinking about waking up!"
Chris, thanks for the montana Aureomarginata bonus. That's a clever marketing strategy. As I researched its growth habits, I added several new hostas to my wish lists. I found a great place for it.
