Early September flowers
My biggest Red October and tardiflora are running late this season. Usually the scapes are up by now.
I have a trough with Candy Dish, Marilyn Monroe and Smokey. All three started their scapes at the same time and looked like they would open together. Candy Dish and Smokey started opening their flowers the same day about 10 days ago. Marilyn Monroe still hasn't opened yet. I noticed the scape on Kinba has the same structure: Here is the flower head of Candy Dish: And a scape from Smokey at the end of last month.

Re: Early September flowers
I took a few early September flowers this morning. After the pounding they got last night from the rain, I had to bring them in the house to let them dry out a bit.
Re: Early September flowers
Thanks Carol. I haven't seen "Travelin' Man" before.
It's funny, when I see photos of Purple Heart flowers they always look small but in the garden they look a lot bigger - must be an optical illusion with the shape of the flower.

'Travelin' Man' is a Linda Port introduction, she gave me last year. It traveled on to the west coast.

Re: Early September flowers
A bunch of new ones opened today. Finally Marilyn Monroe flowered - a couple of weeks later than last season. Marilyn Monroe is a longipes 'Urajiro Hachijo' hybrid:
rupifraga - a species:
Kinba - a hybrid pycnophylla x pycnophylla:
Kifukurin Hyuga - a variegated plant with kikutii hertitage. The flowers open just above the foliage:
The late azaleas are filling in. Here is one called Autumn Embers:

Thanks for the tour
I just love when you open my eyes
And some people cut off the flower scapes

Re: Early September flowers
A Lime Fizz opened today. It had scapes earlier in the season but the rabbits got them. Lime Fizz is in the Lemon Lime family as a seedling of Lemon Delight:
Blueberry Cobbler - a cross of 'Iwa Soules' x 'Blue Blush': And another late flowering azalea - Encore Azalea Autumn Twist:

Re: Early September flowers
Last page:
longipes hypoglauca - a species: The last two are flowers from a pair of seedlings labeled #102 that Art Wrede gave me - he had received the seeds for Bill Meyer years ago. The plants looked the same until the scapes came up - one was green and one was red. The camera doesn't pick up the color well on this first one, to my eyes the violet on the first one is the same as on Violetta: Here is the second one - bigger, lighter: Here they are side by side:

Re: Early September flowers
Is anyone growing Grape Fizz? It put out a huge (thick) scape this year - first time trying to flower. The buds develop and then fall off. So I'm not seeing the flowers. I have it in a trough with other hosta (Chopsticks) flowering like crazy.

Re: Early September flowers
Ed, someone posted over on Garden Web the same issue with Grape Fizz. Said it had to do with the recent cool weather.

Re: Early September flowers
Thanks. That must be it. We have the same weather. Hopefully with this warm-up some will open.

Re: Early September flowers
Only one notable one today Rocket's Red Glare. A Red October opened but the flower was distorted. I'm not seeing any scapes from One Man's Treasure yet - it's really late this year.
Rocket's Red Glare - a cross of 'One Man's Treasure' X 'Strawberry Delight': This one jumped up at me and shouted "Take my picture" - red water iris.
These have a tendency to "run" rather than clump. If one gets established later in the season it can flower. Another azalea with Fall flowers - Encore Azalea Autumn Sundance:
