Can anyone ID these Hostas?

Post by marku1999 »

I know there are tons of varieties of hostas, just wondered if anyone had any ideas on what they might be. They came with the house. I have started a new hosta bed and may divide and move a few of these in the new bed.

Thanks in advance!

Hello and welcome to the forums!

The first one with a picture showing the white centered one is Hosta Undulata Univittata. Often it is incorrectly labelled as Undulata Variegata or Undulata Mediopicta.

The next one is Fragrant Bouquet, especially if it has a light "apple" green center. If the center gets darker green later it could be Fragrant Dream but it is more likely to be Fragrant Bouquet.

The last one is Frances Williams.

All of these are common, older varieties that you would easily find in an older landscape. It gets tougher to ID the newer ones as there are a lot more varieties out there now.

Hope that helps!

The brown markings on the Edge of Francis Williams are where it is "melting out" this is something that this hosta waas known for doing. If you are going to split her then try and out the divisions in a very shady area. that may help a bit. If you particular like that hosta then have a look at olive bailey Langdon very similar without the melting.

Not melting out. That happens to white centred hostas. But rather that is spring desication burn and it's a genetic problem that affects some hosts, 'Frances Williams' being the best known.
