I don't advise planting liners this time of year, but with Q & Z nursery going out of business this fall I'll be getting liners in soon myself and I'll be planting them directly in the ground.

Frost heaving will be the biggest challenge with liners since they won't have a chance to actually root out. To prevent heaving you should cover them with an inch or so of mulch which will help prevent constant freezing and thawing through the winter. In the spring when your hostas are starting to put up new pips you can pull the mulch away from the babies if they are minis/smalls, since those don't like to be covered deeply, or leave the mulch in place if they are medium to large or giant hostas.

Good luck!

Chris
