Hosta of the Day - Otter Point aka #114

Post by redcrx »

This is a name that was just posted for a plant on the First Look Hosta Auction. The plant is one out of Art Wrede's work and Roger Smith gave it a name and donated it. I have been posting pictures of its flowers on this forum for a few years under the "label" #114. That was Art's designation for this plant.

Ed,

I have to admit I saw this item and reacted with a firm "meh." If 'Almost' is one of Art's best plants, this one looks like 'Not Even Close'. Am I missing something about this plant? I assume Art (and you) saw something in it.

Looks like some sort of kikutii x longipes, although Roger is saying the parentage is lost.

Roger gifted me with one of these plants at First Look a couple of years ago. I haven't been successful in using it for breeding yet, but I keep trying. I didn't know he had named it until reading about that on the First Look Auction page. I have it labeled as Wrede #114

The flowers have opened with their "bulls-eye" coloration (that term just hit me today).

I was looking at some old pictures from 2014 and found another plant that can put out a dark center.
The dark pattern varies during the flowering period though.
This one didn't flower last season.

Here is Otter Point (aka #114) one looking very happy today. I don't know why the word "happy" hit me today. Maybe it should be strong and healthy.

In this last photo I was comparing Otter Point's petioles to another plant I got from Art Wrede that also had the designation #114. But the flower is totally different so it is something else and you can see in the photo the petiole coloration is different.

I gave the second plant the garden name of "Concord Point". Concord Point is a spot in the town Havre de Grace where there is a lighthouse. The town is not far from where Art's Azalea Patch Garden used to be. During the War of 1812 the British came ashore at Concord Point and attacked Havre de Grace.

I just noticed that the flower of Otter Point has a little extra color at the end of the style. I had checked a bunch of these flowers before but didn't notice any color. I was comparing these to one I have been calling "Big Quad V-1" to see if they are related. I only noticed it on a few flowers - now I need to check if it shows up on all the plants. And get some better photos - it is hard to capture.

In these photos you can see the small band of purple just behind the pollinated stigma.

Thanks.

I went out today to see if the purple band at the end of the style shows up on other Otter Point plants that I have. Four other plants are not showing the trait but looking back at last year's photos of the same plants they do show it. Might be it's on earlier flowers or maybe its just irregular and lighter on those plants.

One of Art Wrede's unmarked plants has always looked similar to Otter Point but almost like a dull copy of it. Here are the flowers side by side. I did notice a "feature" on Otter Point from this photo - the bract has some color on the edge.
