Hosta of the Day - Field Rat

Post by redcrx »

I was going over some photos from last season and came across this guy. Now I have to see where it got to in my garden.

Field Rat is a tissue culture sport of 'Flamenco Mouse'. It has pointy ears (leaves).

The flowers are darker than what you normal see on the "Mouse" types.

This one is newly arrived (bonus plant!) and potted up under lights in my basement. All the newbies should be moving outdoors this weekend. I have no idea where I'm going to put them!

Thanks for sharing this one, Ed. You now have more pictures of it than I do

Last year I noticed a lot of branching scapes on Field Rat, so it has a really nice flower display that people always ask about when they see it from a distance. And it multiplies like crazy. Overall I think this is just a fun one to have :)

The only thing two Gardeners will ever agree on is what the other is doing wrong.

You won't know how to grow a plant successfully until you've killed it a few times.

I'm looking forward to these bloom scapes opening. And I need to find a permanent home for this rodent.

Grrr. Sideways pic transferred fro iPhone to iPad. I'll fix it tomorrow.
