Our next introduction: Hosta 'Great Lakes Lighthouse'

Post by Chris_W »

When I introduced Hosta 'Eye Never' I was thinking that might be the best sport find in my hosta career, and then two years ago I found a white centered sport of Hosta 'Lakeside Shoremaster' that showed some promise. This year more customers stopped and asked about this sport than I ever would have imagined, so we got it registered and I immediately divided it up. The divisions are taking off so we might even offer it next season :)

The white centers of this hosta mist a bit green later in the season and the leaves often end with a twist and a roll though I wonder if the plant will grow out of that twist as it matures. I divided the sport into two plants in 2014 and made 12 divisions from those two plants this summer.

What a sharp looking hosta, and quite unique. Going on my 'got to get' list immediately! Outstanding growth rate as well, pretty easy to love this one.

Thanks for the feedback :) Normally I will watch and wait on a new sport to make sure I'm not blinded by the thrill of the hunt to know a winner from a loser, but the feedback in person has been very positive on this one. Even just a couple days back a customer was looking for a hosta that I only had in our production greenhouse and when we walked through to get it for them, out of the hundreds of varieties and thousands of plants, this one caught their eye and they stopped to ask what it was :D

I really hope that twist and a roll at the end of the leaves continues as it matures. That characteristic makes this one even more unique.

Thanks again!

Seriously? $98.75 for a hosta?

When there are only a few in existence, yes, they can be expensive. If it had been tissue cultured so there are thousands available then no.
