Hosta of the Day - Red Cloud

Post by redcrx »

Red Cloud is a streaked plant from Alex Malloy with red petioles with the red going up into the leaf-back. It also has a white back and some "frosting" on the front of the leaf. It is from a cross of 'Neat Splash' with 'Riptide'. The leaf shape looks like it comes from 'Riptide'.

This is a new hosta for me. I got it in the auction at First Look this past weekend.

I hadn't been thinking of crosses. I'll to look around to see what's available.

I do have 2 weedlings available - one has really tall purple scapes and large flower with heavy white backed leaves; the other has some stripping in the leaves itself.

I will need to get there early tomorrow before the bees.

I did get some pollen on to it. I used the white backed weedling. The weedling with the streaks didn't have an open flower - it should tomorrow.

Did some crosses today. The streaked weedling had an open flower today - I put its pollen on two flowers of Red Cloud. I also took some RC pollen and put it back on the weedling. And used that pollen on another weedling - the one I used yesterday. I also put RC pollen on "Miss Selene" since they are almost next to each other in the New Garden.
