Any idea of ID of suble patterned green hosta?

Post by Pandora »

I've had this hosta for about 10 years, so it is at least 15-20 years old. A friend of mine collected named hostas and had labels.
Alas she was in first stages of Alzheimer's and labels began to disappear.
I love this hosta and it's reminder.

Does anyone have any guesses? The pattern is so faint, it is like a watermark on paper.
Plant is about 25 " tall and over 3 feet wide.
Leaf is 10" long and 8" wide with 15 vein pairs.

I could send bigger photo if needed

Intriguing. Here's where I can make use of my secret database of hosta leaf show classifications, that lets me search by Section/Class designations. In this case, looking at the Giant, Large, and Medium hosta leaves within class 6b, described as "Green or blue margined, with green or blue center (distinct from margin color)." That yields 66 cultivars. Only a few are a fit after sifting through those with blue/green centers and lighter green edges. Consider against Hosta Library pics:

Devil's Advocate (Blue Angel sport registered in 2007, but yours could be similar; see below)
Dark Shadows (2004)
Reflected Glory (introduced 2009 but older than that)
Academy Kakistocracy (2005)
Velvet Shadows (good match, but 2011 registration)

That said, the classification lists are littered with problem placements. About 1/3 of the hostas in this 6b class should be elsewhere; who knows how many hostas classed elsewhere should be in 6b? (6b is an oddball class, so I had previously flagged a lot of these while doing some research toward improving the hosta shows.)

Of course yours may either be not registered or simply a sport that happened in your friend's garden. It would be helpful to know how/when it blooms: does it match the blooms of Sieboldiana types, Fortunei types (too many veins for that), or even Sum and Substance types (doesn't seem that shiny)?

David, thank you very much for the insight. How clever, I never thought to use the Leaf classification
spreadsheet to help me out. I'll check out the possibilities you've narrowed down.
I will post another picture when it blooms.

I'll be very careful about labeling it as "definitely" something because you are right, I could have been a sport.
But I'd like to have a "maybe" something. It's a keeper for me regardless.

It is not at all shiny. Almost a powdery effect.

Thanks again.

Well, it is not Reflected Glory, because the edge of mine is perfectly straight.
Not Academy Kakistocracy (2005) because that plant is only 10-18 inches tall.
My friend would have never bought one with that name anyway. lol

Yes, Velvet Shadows (good match, but 2011 registration) is a good match.
The leaves on mine are somewhat more oval and the date is wrong.

I will do more checking on the others and come back. Busy weekend ahead.

Thank you all for the work trying to ID this one. I bought Devil's Advocate bc I liked it
And to compare. Definitely not a match.
Velvet Shadows is closest, but wrong year.

So for now I give up. It's UNK:Eula1.
I think it's beautiful.
