clematis question

I have a Nellie Moser clematis growing in a berm. this is the 2nd year for it and the first year it's blossoming. I've noticed the "crown" is above ground and is exposed. should this be covered or is this normal? thanks.

birdy, we toss added dirt on our Clematises all the time. Last year we didn't and they didn't grow as nice.
