Deep Blue Buddlei

Post by whis4ey »

This is distinctly different from the normal Royal Purple. I almost lost this plant two years ago, but grew three from cuttings. Wonderwoman stole two to give away but I managed to get one planted in my own garden

Nice color, Sam! I just love Buddleia. Mine are HUGE! It's probably my favorite scent in the garden at any given time (that and Rugosa Roses).

Hey, why do you suppose they call them Butterfly Bushes?

My newest variety, Royal Red. It seems to appeal to the tiny Crab Spiders, too.

(ok, I'm done with my Buddleia now)

Buddleia davidii 'Empire Blue' has this stunning blue colour, just in case number three gets lost, too.

I can never decide which of my Buddleias to favour most. Buddleia x wheyeriana is a huge shrub with lots of round clusters of yellow flowers with honey scent. The bumble bees love it more than other Buddleias.
Buddleia 'Black Knight' is smaller in growth, and it has wonderful spikes of darkish violett-black flowers with a fascinating scent of vanilla. I've planted it next ot the patio, and in the evenings a cloud of scent wafts over the place.

Thank you for the suggestion Suzanne. I have looked up pictures of Empire Blue on the internet, and they don't seem to be as rich a blue as this one of mine. Lochinar was also suggested to me, but it too does not have the rich blue colour
I had the yellow one until this year when it just upped and withered and died. I cut it down and burnt it so that others would not be affected. The sap was unpleasant looking. Any idea as to what caused this?

Sorry, no, I have no idea. I suppose that you prune your Buddleias in spring in order to avoid early aging? Buddleias are not very long-lived though... how old was your shrub when it died?

It was quite old Suzanne. In fact it hadn't been pruned for two years so was tall and straggly too. Probably lack of TLC was its problem :(

(TLC = tender loving care :))

TGIF = becomes true in about 19 minutes here

I have Buddleia 'Black Knight' but it looks much darker than on your photo. A very dark purplish blue, almost black, with some neon effects.
Might be that the camera can't take it correctly. My Nikon makes a mess of all purples.

The colour is pretty true to real life Suzanne
I came across the same plant duly labelled in the Garden Centre and that is how I have identified it
Maybe depth of colour has something to do with soil or climate?
Still don't know what TGIF means :)

I'll take a photo tomorrow (if it's not too rainy) of my 'Black Knight' and will post it here. The shrub stands next to a Buddleia 'Royal Red', so there will be a chance to compare the colour difference even with individual computer settings.
Which does not mean, that my camera won't mess it up...

Doris,
Do you have a name for that white one? I discovered today that one of my Black Knights is really a white one. The bloom is 3 times the size of the BK. I'll post a pic as soon as I can find out where it's hidding on my puter :???:

That white one is either called 'White Profusion' or 'Profusion', I don't remember which. You should be able to find that on the internet.

Well, finally I have taken a photo of both Buddleia 'Black Knight' and 'Royal Red'. As expected, the camera messes with the purples, but it can not suppress the basic differences.
In reality my 'Royal Red' is more reddish than purple, and my 'Black Knight' has less purple and more black.

I'm wondering whether that is of any help, but I'll attach the foto anyway...

It is nothing like the 'Black Knight' I saw at the Garden Centre
It looks more like my Purple variety (pic attached)
No wonder I am now totally confused :-? :-? :-?
In fact, as I now look at the pics together, my 'purple' variety seems to be a 'Royal Red'
