We need a tree!!!!

Post by nanny_56 »

We need a tree in our front yard to shade the front of the house. We have found out that the upstairs gets really hot from the sun!!!! This was taken around 8:30 am one day.

Because of power lines it should only be 25'x25' maximum and I would like to be able to plant under it. This also show a raised bed we may add next year. I desperately need suggestions!!!!

How about some of the Flowering Dogwoods, Chionanthus aka fringe tree, or continus soggygria aka smoke tree, I believe all three of these stay small and will give you blooms too! Not to sure if a smaller tree will give you much shade for such a big house?

Redbuds grow pretty quickly, but not sure if 25 feet is tall enough to provide shade for your upstairs? Soft wood trees like Maples or birch grow more quickly. A riverburch might be nice, but I have only seen them and never had them so don't know if they have any "issues" that could be a problem

Redbuds would have a larger canopy to plant under...

Maples (red) grow fairly quickly and you can figure about 25 feet on some varieties to be top growth.

Birch are a soft wood I think and would only live like 20 years average, so that might not be so good. Not positive on that, but that's what we told when checking into transplanting some closer to us. :(

You need a tree taller than 25' to shade the upstairs. Dogwoods, redbud and smoke tree (Cotinus coggyria) do not get tall enough. Chionanthus grows way too slowly here.

How about a Halesia monticola (H. tetraptera)? The problem might be finding one large enough to give you shade in the next decade or two. Depending on where you are located, a Full Moon Maple is a wondrous thing! Sophora japonica is worth considering. Fastest shade might come from Sunburst Locust (Gleditzia triacanthos inermis 'Sunburst'.
