Oh Goose, what a find!! You will love it! When we were looking at Dogwoods to replace the rubra one hit by the big tree, that was one we had on the list. In no time it will be a lovely tree for you.

They are the perfect understory tree. They will bloom and grow well in dappled and partly shady locations. I would trim the bottom growth so it is a single stem until it branches a couple feet up.

They are prettiest with a layered open structure, in my book.

Wow! I think you did great for $5. I was expecting a little, tiny cutting.

It's cute the way Willie poses anywhere you put him. :D

The pagoda dogwood (Cornus alternifolia) is a very nice small tree/shrub. This is an under story tree so appreciates some afternoon shade or light shade all day. There are also a couple of very nice variegated cultivars out there worth considering, too. The best of which is C. a. Golden Shadows™. The other variegated form is C. a. 'Argentea' and while nice, has somewhat contorted leaves that leave a little bit to be desired. Golden Shadows™ looks like a "hosta tree" due to the variegation on its leaves. There is also a new, all-gold leafed form that is quite nice. The gold-leaf form is called Gold Bullion™.

Here is a pic of Golden Shadows™ http://www.songsparrow.com/images-plant ... ORGOLS.jpg

I would leave the small branch at the base of your seedling tree. Branches lower on the trunk help to build trunk diameter more quickly. After the plant has gained some size the lower branch can be removed, if desired. Also, due to this plants' horizontal branching habit, that lone, lower branch will add an additional element of grace and style as the plant ages, IMHO. (:o)

Good luck with your plant, it's a great addition to the landscape. The birds love the fruit and the fall color is outstanding.
Mike
(p.s. the species name, alternifolia, refers to this dogwood being alternate leaved. All other Cornus species are opposite in their leaf arrangement.)

Glad to read your post, treelover.

I am looking for a new variegated Dogwood for this spring. Do the golden ones you posted turn more white-edged as the season progresses or do they stay golden? Is 'Argentea' a white-edged? Do you know anything about "Wolfeyes"? I am looking for a white-edged to use as a focal point in my new hosta bed this spring....

Thanks in advance!

Here's a pic of 'Wolf Eyes' (with Hosta 'Eventide') for you, Charla. I love it! I don't even care if it ever blooms although it has.

Viktoria, thank you for sharing that one. It's on the wish list but DH thinks it won't do well with our weather. Plus I can't find it locally.
Can you see I want to fill the yard with Dogwoods?

Thanks, Viktoria! Gorgeous!!! And that is the look I'm going for....I want the white-edged Dogwood to be the focal point in my new garden where I will incorporate my newer white/light streaked hostas along with blues and greens.

Viktoria, do you know about it's growth rate? I'm wondering if I can get by to start with a smaller one, or if it's slower I need to put out the bucks for a larger one?

Thanks again! That's a lovely photo and a beautiful combination!

KHT, I cannot comment because I have no experience with growing on the West Coast.

Charla, it grows decently but not fast. If you are anywhere near my age group (103), get a larger one. My days of ordering small starts are over! When I was younger (budget had something to do with it, too), I would select one item a year that I would spend more bucks on; maybe this could be your one item for the year?

Here is a pic of it in bloom:
