Idiots Afloat Ep. 3 Ubud Palace, Bali

The Idiots spent about a week in Bali. They have hundreds of pictures from many different locations – and because they are on the road, they don’t have time to edit and share them all with their readers.

So the Idiots chose just one location – the ancient royal palace in Ubud – to share a walk-around with their readers. Be prepared for a lot of photos!

Many of Bali’s most picturesque sites are temples and, as holy places, sometimes offer limited visitation. The Palace is a public space so it is possible to just wander around most of it without a guide. The areas that can’t be entered can often be glimpsed – and photographed – through opened doorways and gates.

The Idiots would have no doubt enjoyed a guide and learning more about the history of the ancient kingdoms on Bali and the traditions and beliefs that suffuse this site… but on this morning they enjoyed the freedom of just exploring at their own pace and responding to the wonders it revealed.

About the stone and wood carving. Much of the work was done before the Bali artists had tools made of hardened metals. Much of the carving was done with stone tools.

This is a do-it-yourself tour for Idiot readers. Imagine you are meandering through this visual feast of delights. Look up, look down… look around. Peak through doorways. Observe the well designed spaces, but also keep an eye out for the details. And don’t be disturbed by the scary demons. Remember – these frightening visages are your friends – they are carefully placed to scare away bad things to keep your lives happy and safe!

Great as always. Appreciate the sights and adventure, not so much the plane ride!

35 hours of travel would have me looking for the nearest hospital, but I am so glad that you are able to hang in there for it, and so grateful that you share your journey. And as always, you create a masterpiece with your photos. The person in the Crocs, with the layered wrap bottom and the t-shirt, and 2 cell phones? Where else in the world would you see something like that? Love all of it, and i'm only on the second leg of your journey.
