These are such bizzare plants, and then they bloom and they are really alien!!! But fun and easy to grow.

Ohhhhhh pretty and unusual for sure! This looks like one DD would love to have. I've never seen anything like it.

Thanks for showing us, Andi!

Sarracenias are commonly known as Pitcher plants. They're carnivorous bog plants, full sun, insects crawl down the pitchers and get trapped, and the plant gets a good meal. They're fully hardy for me here in Washington State, have even been covered with snow and they do fine.

Beautiful photography :D
A few years ago when the middle school kids were painting banners to go on the street lights (had to choose an endangered species.....most kids chose animals, my dtr chose pitcher plants and painted that instead. It got lots of attention because it was so different than all the other banners. MY dtr just thought they were so cool. :D

Didn't know the proper name for it, but I do recognize the name "pitcher plant". Very cool looking, indeed. Wonder how it does in zone 5 in NE Ohio?? :???:

The species sarracenia purpurea is hardy to zone 2, but most of these hybrids come from southern blood, and are probably not hardy to zone 5. with global warming, you'll probably only need to wait a few years, though. Plant Delights sells a lot of them, if you want to check hardiness info.

My Dixie Lace (I think) is blooming for the first time this year!

Andi,

It's good to see your pitcher plant bog growing so well. I remember talking to you about 2-3 years ago when I was planning my bog.

I am in Zone 5, and have left my pitcher plants out all winter for 3 winters now, with no losses. Most recommend mulching heavily, but I have not even done that. I would like to get S. purpurea ssp purpurea, but have 'Judith Hindle,' 'Dana's Delight,' S. rubra, and S. 'Scarlet Belle.'

I have found that my venus fly traps hold out well into about February, but somehow die back after that point.

Mine still have not flowered, however. I am hoping that changes this year. I guess we'll see!
