Holly in zone 5

Reiter,

You have a wonderful selection of trees/shrubs there.

I lived in zone 5 for 15 years and I had a holly (which I still visit). It was a combo grafted jobbie of China Boy and Girl. I had a small yard and wanted the hollyberries. I never considered it to be a tree in zone 5. I don;t think it will ever get that size. It is maybe 4-5' tall now, 20 years later. (I know they get big in the South.)

The yews will grow fairly quickly. In well-drained soil I think they can almost be thugs!

I would recommend adding a smokebush. I had a Nordine that was the rave of the neighborhood. I propagated a piece for my zone 4 home and am thinking of training a pink clematis like Comtessa di Bouchard up it.I think the pink and maroon would be cool and it would save space.

As for getting the lawn mower to the back... dig up all the grass (it just turns brown without water and with heat anyway), plant gardens, sell the rider and use the money to buy more plants, for the enlarged north garden... problem solved! I guess my work is done here!

If those hollies aren't going to grow, I may chuck them.

The smokebush sounds good. Pink and maroon are heavenly combinations.
