Interesting ?? on Goldenrod

Post by renaldo75 »

I just noticed this a few days ago. These were just forming on a couple of the long stems that were leaning out away from the upright stems of the plant.

Weird, but  !!

Anyone ever seen anything like this before?? :-?

I'll keep an eye on them as they develop & take more pics.

Reldon, there has been a solidago called 'Fireworks' for sale for a few years now. I don't own it, but it looks alot like what your pics show. :P

I had purchased some short [2'] solidago several years ago. I have lots of it now - all self-seeded from those original plants. And the new ones are all 5-6' tall. This is from one of those.

looks like Aster yellows, a virus. It infects many diffrent species in the aster famiily. Most people notice it when it infects their Purple Cone Flowers.

Plants should be removed and destroyed- there is no cure, it is spread by sap-sucking insects.

Thanks Paul299, I was about to state either insect or virus but with all the talk about virus lately. I was sitting here in silence. :???:

All plants and animals have viruses. The ones that we need to avoid are the ones that kill or
greatly deform.

This Virus is technically not a true virus but a mycoplasma that deforms a broad range of plants
and over time results in death.

Only in last 25 years, or so, have we started to learn about these pathogens, they have alwas
been with us.
