Peony Question

Post by Midnight Reiter Too »

Was I supposed to cut my peony foliage back in early December? I never had peonies before so I don't know what's best for them.

I like to cut the peonies down in late fall/early winter but if you don't get to it until spring it shouldn't be a big deal.

I use Halloween as an easy way to remember when to cut back my peonies. But anytime this winter and spring should okay. The new growth will come from buds underground, not on any of the old growth.

It is good to clean up the old foliage when the frost kills it, to avoid overwintering disease.

Thanks, everyone! By the time the frost kills things, I'm usually thinking about Christmas instead of my garden. I guess I'll put a note on my calendar.
