Japanese Fern (Athyrium Nipponicum) ... a weed?

Post by HostaDesigner »

I have about 10 "volunteers" coming up in the area where the original one is planted. Is this fern a spreading "weed" or do I just have ridiculously good conditions for it? Granted it's a nice looking weed... :) This is not the Painted Fern, just the regular Jap Fern.

Here's a pic from last year of one of the volunteers. I'll post a pic of the new ones after I snap some new pictures today.

Seems strange that they spread so easily. It's unlike any of my other ferns.

I'm fortunate to keep a fern alive here. Would love to have the problem with this little weed.

We get quite a few sporelings from our original 'Pictum,' most of which are nearly as pretty as the parent. I hardly consider them a weed, as they transplant quite readily to a more desirable location (there's always somewhere to tuck a fern).

Now if you want a weed, just let a single flower from a morning glory go to seed!
