I don't know why this happened, I have been nursing my Echium Pininana throughout last summer and winter, and just as I was looking forward to a burst of flowers this happened.

On closer inspection I found the top half of the stem looks like this.

Do you think I can save it by cutting it below the rot?

Ugh.

No advice, but I'd certainly try cutting it back and sterilizing the pruners afterwards.
