I saw this unusual plant today, I think it's a trillium. The flower starts in the usual trillium position on top of the leaf then extends its stalk to produce the flower under the leaf. I was lucky to spot it.

Maybe it is a trillium. There are only three petals and the mayapple has more than three. I also read that "some trilliums have a flower which is bent downward, below the leaves."

Definitely Trillium and looks like T. rugelii. Native to the southeastern US.
