Hair clippings

Post by Dovid »

Hair, such as from the sweepings at a hair salon or dog grooming business, is supposedly worth adding to a compost pile. It is classified as a "green" rather than a "brown" due to its nitrogen content. I am sure that I could get garbage bags full of the stuff each week from some nearby hair salons but I am wondering if I would have a major odor problem after adding it to the pile. Anyone who has tried this out?

Dovid,
I've never used it for mulch, but I have set hair outside in the spring. Many birds (such as tufted titmice) will use it for nesting material.

Carefull with hair for birds, I used some hair from my Persian cat for my finches nesting material untill it got wrapped around their feet. Try cutting that away without cutting off the bird's leg.

Slugs don't like hair clippings either. It clings to their bodies and they have to slime it off.
