Frank Smith's Daylilies of Distinction

Post by bobbo »

Are there any prettier daylilies than Frank's? I think not! Our club got his flowers for our 2006 Hybridizer Study. Frank and his assistant Tina Krull treated us very well. 28 cultivars and 47 plants after I divided some of them. Bridey Greeson is a single fan at present but I held her back from the study until she divides so 2 members can grow it instead of just 1. My wife and I will grow from this, Bridey Greeson, American Freedom,Frank's Star of Bethlehem, and Spanish Wedding Gown. After 2 years or more if needed we return all but 2 fans to the club to be sold and get 2 fans as a thank you, for growing and evaluating them. It's a pretty neat program. :D

Very nice. I wouldn't mind doing that either.

Very cool!

I would love to be on the list to test new plants in my zone. Never know when you might end up with the next big winner!

Yeah, put me on that list also.

I got Moment in the Sun this year. I hope it blooms.
Frank does have nice daylilies, but I hear that zone 6 is about the coldest you can get for lots of his. Others in 5 say they don't do well. But of course it depends ....

A friend in Illinois got rid of a couple of his Smith daylilies. But then, he kept some, too. And just bought BRIDEY GREESON. So I guess up in zones 5 and 6, you have to take your chances. Best bet is probably southern exposure, protected & near your house foundation or something like that. Or maybe decide to grow some really expensive annuals.
