Is it some kind of squash virus causing this? I really don't know - not much into veggie growing myself

It was sold at Wal-Mart with the pumpkins. Would the grower sell a pumpkin that had a virus? I can't find anything like this online. I think I've visited a couple dozen pumpkin sites.

Did this happen while it was sitting on your porch over winter or did you buy it this way? Was it 'normal' when you bought it? Cut it open, what does it look like inside??

It came the way that it looks in the photo. In fact, that's why I bought. It is the weirdest pumpkin I've ever seen. I had to have it. When I cut it open, it looked perfectly normal inside! Nice orange flesh. What would make the outside look so weird with all that tan stuff on it???
