Hallson Gardens

Last year (unknown to me) My husband brought a minature rose into the basement and this year I was rewarded with 2 huge pots of plants. I purchased another this week (clearance of course) and would like to know what is the correct way to overwinter. We have added a huge southfacing coldframe--wannabe greenhouse to the southside of our house a little above grade and hopefully it will be heated to above freezing this year. Should I let the roses freeze a little first before bringing them in??
Help would be appreciated.

Sorry I didn't catch this sooner, I just put our up closer to the house and don't bring them in if potted, by why not put them in the ground in the spring??

I grow mini roses in pots. I have tried different ways to overwinter. One year I left all outside, but it was a mild winter. Lost about 1/4 of them (7-8). The best I have found is to let them go dormant for a few months then bring in to a cool greenhouse. Still lost 1 or 2. Some minis are just not very hardy, depending where you got them, others are very hardy. I have very good success with ones I have planted in the garden. Fluctuating spring temps seem to be hard on them. Having said that, if you can keep them in the coldframe from getting too warm during the day, and keep them more evenly temp'd, they would probably do well there. But better is to plant in the garden. I can't, because of walnut sap...roses really don't like that!

BTW, I have fewer problems with pests and diseases on those planted in the garden. While minis do okay in pots, they do better in the garden.
