You could try using an underscore as a null character and set the font color to white (#FFFFFF).

So that:
A______B______C______D
becomes
A______B______C______D

Except of course the background isn't exactly white. Maybe Chris could tell you the color code for the post's background colors (which alternate), as they don't seem to be part of the available font color set.

Of course you don't have access to a monospaced font, so alignment will still be a problem.

I think space - space will work OK. Am going to post a long list of plant names with a link to threads about them. Chris has promised to make it into a sticky so we can find them.
