Canna Lily Wyoming 10/4/12

Post by boops »

One of my Favorite Canna-Wyoming because of the color of the foliage and how flowers contrast with the foliage.

We find they do best in pots and lots of shade. It is our best seller when folks see the variegation. Some of ours throw off pure white leaves.

Wow-white leaves-which ones do that? Stuttgart? I tried some canna in pots in the shade and they barely grew foliage and no flowers. Will try again in the spring. Thanks.

Yep it's the Stuttgart, it even throws off pure yellows. I have 3 20 gallon pots of it, it's my favorite. The first thing that goes into the greenhouse.

Think I may try them again in the spring, waiting for Wyoming to finish and then pulling the rhizoms, drying them dividing them and in the peat box in the garage. I also have stripped beauty which is a yellow flowering one with variegated foliage. Last year stripped beauty overwintered in the ground, but I think we are going to have a more severe winter this year, so I'm pulling those also.

Canna Lily is a zone 7 plant,I think you got them confused with Calla Lily which is a zone 8-10 plant. I planted them right next to the foundation of my house, the other side of that wall is my bathroom and the radiator is there. So I think the heat kept the concrete warm and made a slight micro climate. It was an experiment, I am leaving one in the ground again this year I think-just to push the limit  Also because I hate overwintering things in the garage. :D

OC has always had good luck with Cannas and Elephant Ears. Down here we have to plant them the first year in early spring (usually about April) and fortunately they can survive our S>C> winters. I have found that if I plant them in the fall, they freeze and do not make it . With a season in the ground, good roots form under the Rhizhomes and they will come back. Just thought I'd pass that along. Coot

Thanks Coot-the ones I left in the ground from last summer are coming up. the ones I took in did not. So from now on will plant in spring and leave them alone. Although too soon to tell about the Elephant Ears in put in the ground last month-we have had alot of cold nights here. Also your zone 8, I'm 6B so the Elephant ears will survive by you, not by me.
