Alexa,

Why NOID on the painted fern? Do you disagree with the tag? These come up wild all over my garden, so I always have a few to share.

David
P.S. I liked that first pic enough to set it to my desktop background for the week!

Hey David

The tag actually goes with the second fern photo. They are similar but definitely not exactly the same. I know the first is a painted fern also, I just don't think it is the same variety.

The second one does look like the variety listed on the tag.

Sorry for the confusion.

There are some clonal selections of a. nipponicum var. pictum (e.g. see Plant Delights catalog), but I expect that most in the trade are "sporelings," which show some variability in the red/silver balance.

The only alternative is that it's the interspecific hybrid athyrium 'Ghost,' relatively new to the trade (maybe 4 years).

THanks for the clarification.

And I just saw your note that you used it as your desktop - thanks for the 15 min of fame :D

BTW - the one with the tag came from Russell Gardens last year. Are you going to be making any trips up there this spring? I am always looking for an excuse to stop by, and I would love to spend a little time chatting and shopping with you.

I am new to this forum and web site. I have a very large heavily wood yard in N.E. Atlanta. I love ferns and Lily of the Valley; I really want to pretty up my yard with some woodland flowers and plants. I have a small budget to work with, and need low or no maintanance plants.
I would like to plant some flowering spreading plants among the trees, heavy shade and some flowers and ferns as borders, and a good hardy spreading ground cover to replace grass (mostly weeds now). Any suggestions?
I am new to gardening too. Oh, I have a dog too, who doesn't dig much.
Thanks, Linda :)
