seed starting mix

I've enjoyed the postings on seed starting. Can someone offer a mix that works well? I sterilized commercial potting soil in the oven in a big stainless steel bowl (I didn't think it smelled that bad?!) I didn't have mold problems, but I did have lots of gnats! I didn't realize they were coming from my seedling trays. The hosta seedlings share the warm plant room with the orchids...

I started my seeds between Thanksgiving and Christmas and left the lights on 24 hours. A few flowered before spring planting- others never did flower last season at all.

Any ideas for keeping the seed trays warm to promote germination?

Linda,

There are heating mats for seedling trays. Do a google and you'll find several places. I'm thinking of getting a couple myself to help cut the cost of heating the room a higher temp.
