All Plain Green X Dostoyevsky

Post by redcrx »

In 2016 I crossed a Plain All Green white flowered hosta that I got from Art Wrede with a red flowered plant named Dostoyevsky out of Jeff Moore's hosta group. I made a lot of crosses using pollen from Dostoyevsky. I moved two of the seedlings into my front bed late last season and they both survived and are putting up scapes. One really odd thing is one of the plants is streaked.
The small dark green plant top/middle of the first photo is another cross from 2016 - clausa normalis 'Jilin' X Dostoyevsky - I ended up with a lot of these.

A second plant has opened its flower and I think something is wrong. I didn't expect a this big purple flower.

I expected something like this. The second flower to open on the streaked plant.

There was something familiar about those flowers and it finally dawned on me this evening when I saw Austin Dickinson in flower. This size and shape comes from the plantaginea background of the pod parent. The pod parent was fragrant and this seedling is fragrant - finally noticed it tonight. The Iron Gate series flowers have a similar look to the white flower - again the plantaginea background.

I think I'm seeing a "blush" on the edge of the white flower. It shows up better on the camera/phone screen than it does on my computer monitor (and being color blind makes me guess at things).

And the purple one. This one seems to have more fragrance.

Again Ed was kind enough to share some of these seeds with me. This one bloomed last year and on a good day it is mildly fragrant. The second one, (I only got two seedlings out of a good number of seeds, common in plantaginea crosses) should bloom any day. It looks like the color will be similar. My second plant bloomed today 8-20, very similiar to the first no fragrance and no recurved petals.

The curved petals are interesting. Jeff Moore had a plant called 'Edgar Allen Poe' a cross of Flor Roja x Designer Genes. It had re-curved petals.

Dostoyevsky, the pollen parent here, has a similar piece in it's background - (Flor Roja x Kokuryu) x (Exp 136 x Self).

The flowers started opening a few days ago but I was away (visiting the grand-kids in Florida - it was mid-90s and came home to 50 and light frost over-night) and couldn't get pictures until today.
