The pleasure and wonder of watching things grow has made gardening one of my favorite hobbies. In 2000, I stumbled on a gardening forum and met some wonderful hosta people. Before that moment, it never occured to me that a person could go crazy collecting green leafy plants. I know other hosta fanciers have admitted feeling that way at one time in their lives. After seeing the wide diversity of color, size, and shape of hostas, setting up my own collection turned into an exciting venture. While I don't have as many hostas as a lot of people do here, I am very pleased with my landscape and add 10-12 new ones each year.

Another big hobby of mine is astronomy. Looking up at the beauty of the night sky and trying to understand its secrets is one of humankind's oldest desires. Even plants, from the lowliest groundcover to the loftiest tree, strive for the heavens. Okay, okay, I'm a lousy poet. Let's just say, gardening keeps me busy and happy during the day and astronomy keeps me happy and up all night. I've written articles for Astronomy Magazine and Mercury and attend many star parties.

Other activities include knitting, quilting (both hand and machine), sewing, doing flower arrangements, and reading. I also like camping and fishing with my husband.

In May, 2005, I finally graduate from Marquette University with a Master's degree in Journalism (science writing). My main occupation is research chemist - DNA related organic chemisty; or I should say "was". I work at the Medical College of Wisconsin behind a desk now, helping design studies and do statistical analysis for breast cancer projects.

What helps to continually nurture my interest in gardening is the satisfaction in growing something beautiful, balancing the needs of each plant with available light and moisture, and playing their characteristics off from each other. All of this is an enjoyable challenge with many rewards. What makes it fun are the people at the Hallson's forum. I don't write many posts, but I'm there every day. Chris and Brian's efforts in creating a place for us is a winning proposition for everyone involved. Thanks guys.
