I don't see any discoloration, but both of these are back 1/2 to 1/4 their previous sizes! And have funny looking leaves. HVX or Stress?

S&S was eating the other plants around it last two summers. Planed to redo bed and move the Fragrant Bouquet and Night Before X-mas further out this year. Not necessary now. There also was a Gold Standard behind the NBC that was the size of the ? Green/white. Came back with one eye this year.

Hi Tami,
The plants look like they suffered from drought last year, or possibly the crowns are exposed or too close to the surface so may have dried over the winter.
Are they under the eaves of the house so the rain doesn't always get to them? I've seen this before and found that the soil there was extremely dry. Plants like Sum and Substance need a ton of water to get big and keep their size. It could have been possible for water to miss the ones in the back. I don't have any reason to suspect HVX, especially since it doesn't make the plants decline, just discolor and grow funny, but they still grow.

That could be it! Thanks for the advice, glad to know I don't have to destroy my plants. I will increase the H2O and add peat to soil. That would also explain why I have a few spots that I can't get anything to grow. Under eaves and near a new foundation!
Thanks, Tami
