Niagara Falls infected???

Post by Nathalie23 »

Hi!

I read that Niagara Falls is susceptible to have HVX. I bought this hosta from a safe place last year. But I'm worry about it. I can't contact the nursery where I bought it since the two owners died last year... I'm wondering if frost can be responsible for this because new leafs seam to be OK or if I should admit that I have one infected... again! What do you think?

Hi Natalie,

Yes, that's what an infected Niagara Falls will look like. It doesn't have any color change, just the uneven bumping that follows along the veins.

The back of the leaves look fine so it doesn't look like frost damage.

Sorry :(

Natalie -

What I learned is that there is no such place as a "safe" place.
I had a Hosta (a Gypsy Rose) show signs of HVX last year and it came from the same nursery that yours came from.

I had another (see the thread on Lakeside Looking Glass), which came from a different nursery, diagnosed with HVX this year.

I'm sorry for your loss, but it seems all we can do is watch carefully and always be careful how we handle the plants.

Nathalie,

Hosta Choice Nurseries has been sold. I received an email today from the new owners in regard to my infected Hosta. When I replied to them, I mentioned your case as well and they ask you to contact them. They are Glenn & Yvon and can be reached at shadegardening@aim.com

Well that rots!

Another one to add to the list of "Keep a close eye on". Like that list isn't long enough already......

My hosta Niagara Falls had some lumpy, somewhat distorted leaves, so I suspected HVX. I tested the plant this summer with negative results. However, just to be sure, I tested again in late fall. No signs of HVX. I am hoping that next summer NF will return to its former glory. Maybe 2008 was just a bad year. I have had positive HVX diagnoses with my test kits, so I am quite confident that I'm getting a good result.
