Is this the Hosta Virus?

Post by Ingrid »

Hi everybody, I´m new here.
I live in the middle of Sweden, Europe.
Found this forum when I was seaching for information about the Hosta Virus.
My Hosta 'Big Daddy' doesn´t look well and I´m worried... Here´s 3 photos of the same plant. I wonder if you could tell me if this is the Hosta Virus?
The flowers are under the leaves and the stem is curly (don´t know if I use the right words, but I hope you understand).
I´m very greatful if someone would like to make a comment, please.

Hello ,Ingrid. Welcome to Hallsons! I can't say that I see anything resembling Hosta Virus X on your Big Daddy, but that first picture looks a bit like nematodes to me. Wait for Chris to take a peek and he'll be able to give you a better answer.
Glad you found us. This is a very informative site!

Hi Ingrid, and welcome to the forums!

That first leaf looks like possible frost/freeze damage that could have occurred back when this hosta just had eyes poking up out of the ground. I bet the back of the leaf shows some damage to it also, probably streaking back from the tip.

The short, curly and twisted scape is most often the result of herbicide damage. This type of damage is often caused by weed preventers such as surflan and treflan, such as you might find in chemicals like Preen, Snapshot, or other weed prevention chemicals including weed-n-feed that is often used on lawns. This chemical can also drift from nearby areas, so it may not necessarily be something you used, but maybe a neighbor used. It really doesn't cause any long term damage, just odd scapes and sometimes twisted petioles. In time the plants will grow out of it.

But to answer your question, no I don't see any reason to suspect HVX on this plant.

Hope that helps, and again, welcome to the forums.

Thank you! That´s good news for me and my 'Big Daddy'.
I´ll keep the plant to see what happens next season. I haven´t used any chemicals but maybe my neightbours. This border is next to their lawn so perhaps that´s the answer.

Pia, I live in Sollefteå, about 500 km north of Stockholm.
