Diagnosing HVX on Halcyon

Post by guardbear »

Hi All

I think I read a little while ago that dianosing HVX on Halcyon was difficult. Since I purchased mine in 2005, before I knew about the plague, I've kept an eye on mine and have not seen the typical signs on the top of the leaf. But, I decided to look on the backside, and noticed the discoloration that shows up in the pics below. I don't see any tissue collaspe on any leaves - old or new. Also, this backside marking is not more present on old leaves vx. new ones. This leaf is a more mature one, and has the most backside markings. Only thing I notice this year is that the flower stalks are short -- barely showing above the leaf growth -- may have been like this last year as well.

Any thoughts welcome -- as well as regarding the short blooms, as 5-6 other hostas are also having short blooms this year.

Thanks
Linda

THank you both for your positive responses.

I don't know a thing about what would cause these marks on the underside bloom of the leaf.

Does anyone know?

Again thanks, and I'll proceed as if my Halycon is doing okay.

Hi Linda,

Those marks just look like some of the wax has rubbed off a little. Your leaf looks perfectly normal to me too.

I have noticed short stalks this year also. One of my Stained Glass has flowers barely above the leaves.

I can't see anything wrong either to be honest where the wax has rubbed off I would say it's where the leaf has been handled, it's so easy to remove the bloom just by touching.
