What sort of grass?

I grew this and a few others like it from seed that I planted a couple of years ago. I can't remember where I got the seeds, or what they were from.

Last year, they all grew to about 18 inches tall, and looked like tufts of some sort of grass, about 18 inches tall.

This year they all look different - last year's leaves have died and now they all have a thicker stem in the centre, the same as this one. Right now it's about the thickness of a pencil

Can anybody identify it?

This is a laugh - was I ever mistaken. It's turned out to be not a grass of any sort.

It's now, in the first week in May, putting out some Purple flowers. After asking around, I've learned that it's SALSIFY!
