Saying Goodbye

Post by patsue53 »

About 16 years ago he wandered into the neighborhood. He'd been living in a neighbor's garage for a few days (neighbor who is not known for being nice to animals) and my girls brought him home. Daddy said to call Mommy at work and if she says its okay we can keep him. Of course Mommy said okay because our house ALWAYS said okay to strays. He was so pretty! Kind of off-white with orange ears and tail and pretty blue eyes that were usually just a tiny little bit "wall-eyed" giving him a slightly comical, quizzical expression. He was immediately an affectionate lover of a cat. If you were sitting he was sitting on you. (not always welcome...white hair on navy pants! ) When we brought home our Scottish Terrier puppy they became best of friends and would wrestle and play forever. (until Angus got too big and then Taffy just steered clear.) He came to us already neutered and front declawed. I made a few feeble attempts to find the real owners but noone had notified the shelters so it seemed to be that he chose us. (we told ourselves.)

Many years later he has about 4 teeth, he moves very slowly, and isn't at all interested in this big puppy we brought into the house a year ago. He's pretty boney and doesn't spend alot of time grooming that pretty white coat (which still loves to cling to Navyblue pants and purple scrubs.) A few weeks ago he seemed to have a cold...lots of nasal drainage and sneezing. We've been fighting a corneal abrasion for months with surgery, ointment and home remedies. Then last week his eye was totally swollen shut and he had a big lump on his head. He looked like DD when she developed a severe sinus infection. I took him to the vet who said "we're going to treat him with antibiotics and steroids and hope it's an infection but my gut tells me he has a nasal tumor that's broken through the nose bone."
Thinking back on the sneezing and nose drainage I knew in my heart that he was right. The steroids did seem to help reduce the size of the bump between his eyes, but it didn't go away completely. His eye is still swollen shut. 2 more visits to the vet and he gave me options and told me the probable outcome. We could spend a great deal of money on MRI's, nasal scopes, and ultra sounds to make a definate diagnosis but the outcome would be the same. The vet says this isn't rare and he could surgically "scoop it out" every few months" but eventualy the tumor would win. I can't see putting my old boy through surgery every few months. So we're in the process of telling our sweet guy goodbye. DD is coming home on leave for a few days so I'm going to wait until after she leaves unless Taffy seems to be suffering. He's still eating and drinking. Beyond that he mostly sleeps. He doesn't come up for cuddles as much but did sit on my lap last night (until Hugo decided to join us.)

Sorry for the long post. Thank you for letting me cry on your shoulder.

I've been through pretty much this same thing - and I can reassure you that you are making the right decision. Bless your heart - it's a very hard thing to go through. He's beautiful, and he's had a wonderful life with you. Many kitties never have anywhere near that much.

Oh, it's so hard to make a decision like that, but you're doing the right thing. He's so fortunate to have lived a long, wonderful life with you. I'm sure you've given him as much love as he's given to you over the years.

Hugs to you while you're going through this hard time...

What more can I add...everyone else has said exactly what I feel. I'm so sorry just doesn't seem to be enough. Bless you, Pat, for taking him in and giving him a loving home all these years. We all understand how hard this is for you and your family. :(

Oh Dear. I understand your struggles. We've had a difficult few months in our house too with the loss of three of our wonderful kitties. It's such an agonizing time for everyone concerned.

Taffy is a beautiful boy. He sounds so much like my wonderful Puppy the Cat who loved cuddles and snuzzles and affection. Trust yourself to make the right decision for Taffy. That has been the hardest part for me. I second guessed myself until I literally made myself sick.

God Bless and keep you, your family and Taffy during this difficult time. Taffy knows how much you love and care for him. He's had a wonderful life with you.

Thank you all for your kind words. Taffy's been such a wonderful member of our family that it's hard to imagine what it will be like when he's gone. :( But I cannot stand to think of him suffering and as soon as it is apparent that he is then we'll do what we have to do. Here's a picture of him sleeping in Logan's stroller. He's always been one to snuggle up in the weirdest places to sleep.

I have a white 'lucy' that picks the strangest of places too. Maybe it's there coloring :) She's currently picked a paint pan with roller and brush included in it, that's still wrapped in cellophane! Odd for certain! Just waiting for her to put a nail through it and get the pop of her life! :)

Pat, I haven't been online since last week and am so sorry to hear about Taffy. I know this is a difficult time for you, but I think you are making the right decision in not choosing to let Taffy suffer through a series of operations that would not in the end resolve his problem. My heart goes out to you and your family as you spend your final days with this beautiful boy. Please know that we are all with you in spirit and send much love.
