Never had a fern randomly sprout in my seedlings before.

Honestly, I wouldn't worry about the green slime. Here's a closeup of the same flat with the new fern. I actually think the stuff keeps the soil nice and moist. (It's algae, I assume?) Here's a pic of the whole flat. It's most certainly not affected badly from the slime!
You also have a nice liverwort growing next to the fern.
