Pic of the Day--Zounds
Hi All--Zounds is on the short list of my favorite varieties. First of all, any name that starts with a "Z" must indicate good things. Beyond that, Zounds has very attractive, very bright foliage that holds up well in a lot of sun and it doesn't attract slugs. The flowers offer an eye catching contrast to the foliage. I have had Zounds since 1994 and since 2001 have had it growing in a spot that gets about 6 hours of mostly afternoon sun. By the end of summer the plant may be showing some leaf burn but not much if it is kept well watered. Starting in 2001 it has measured 37x17, 38x15, 45x24, 42x21, 51x20, and 52x25. That compares to Zilis' listing of 50x22 and Lemke's registration information of 40x30. The photos are from 2002, 2004, and 2006.

Well, if you like hostas that start with Z, you're going to love my next registration H. 'Zucchini Succotash Zurprise' - just can't get enough of those food-theme names!
Zounds is the last entry in Zilis book - the only Z listed. It is an oldie, registered by Paul Aden back in 1978 as a cross, Golden Waffles x Golden Prayers.
I like Zounds a lot as well. The first pic was one of the first digital photos I ever took... back in 2002, with a borrowed Mavica that recorded directly onto a floppie... we've come a long way in a short time! The quality isn't great, but it shows Zounds glowing in morning light in a nice grouping.
Unfortunately, that Lady Isobel continued to grow, plus that space is now reserved for my August Moon sport family... so I moved it in 2005. The second photo is after the move, so the plant is somewhat reduced in size - but it gives another view of what is one of Zounds best features - its great leaf texture.
I'm still waiting to hear - we saw Dick Ward a few days ago, a nice green margined sport of Zounds... but is anybody growing a green-centered sport of Zounds and how is it doing?

Zounds
Hank, beautiful plant; great pictures. It's one of my favorites too. Mine faces south, barely covered by a few branches of a Dolgo crab, and loves it.

Zounds in the crabapple bed
Since I really like this Hosta, I have to show mine off too. It began in 2000 as a 1-month-after-receiving-your-tc-plugs eBay Hosta supplier's rip-off as shown at about 2 o'clock as the little yellow speck in the first picture.) The second is from 2005.

Beautiful Zounds everyone! I love the fact that it has so much texture to the leaves and can be placed in sunnier locations. I got one in 2005 and planted it in a spot that gets quite a bit of sun. I don't know why I don't have a pic from last year, but here's a pic of the young one right after I planted and mulced it. It's very pretty.

I love Zounds! It was one of my first! I planted it in 2003. It came up in 03, 04, 05 but not 06. So I put another in its spot. The previous one didn't grow. The one I planted last year is already about an inch tall. Looks like it has grown. I really want this hosta to flourish. From your postings, I think I have it in the right place. Maybe I just got a bad one before, or accidentally did something to it. Beautiful pics everyone!!

I don't have it, but 'American Eagle' is a dark centered 'Zounds' sport. I tried to order 'Dick Ward' from Chris one year, but the whole crop frost heaved and was lost. So I still don't have that one either. But I love my 'Zounds'!
